In a corny emotional moment i just feel like sharing my excitement over what has happened in this country over the last couple of days. with the recognition of all of the hard work that so many people have put in for really the past six years to get us here. i was a participant in that movement on some level, more so when i worked in the ny state senate and since then on smaller levels, making calls and campaigning/volunteering around election time, but having been on the inside of the political process has given me insight both into the bullshit that politics are, and more interestingly into the immense amount of effort that sooo many people put into working toward more representative government. and i am feeling so appreciative of these people, and even of parts of our political process at the moment. it has really been amazing to experience this election process. it is the first time in my life that i have seen anything like it. a sense of democracy, a glimmer of hope, feeling like a part of a whole, people caring about midterm elections (thank you bush for that). saving us from bush's fanaticism. reminding me to believe in people. i really feel that the people have spoken. and i know that there isn't much of a difference between a dem and a rep. i know this won't mean an immedaite end to this war and reparations for iraq. i know that little will change in the way i would have it change insofar as governmental beholdeness to profit. but to me for this week it is more about disent. disent. disent. disent. thank you michael moore. thank you john stewart. thank you steven colbert. thank you noam chomsky. thank you ralph nader. thank you amy goodman. thank you howard dean. thank you hugo chavez. thank you SEIU. THANK YOU MOVEON.ORG... all of these people have their faults. but they have all at the very least inspired critical thought, disent, and a sense of ownership and community among those of us who believe in separation of church and state, people over profit, choice and human rights.
personally, i am so much more excited to live in Massachusetts under the leadership of a black democratic governor, the first black person in the governor's office and the first dem in 16 years (in a pretty racist state). i am excited to see the first woman speaker of the house (dud tho she may be). to see rumsfeld go. that south dakota opposed the abortion ban...that foley and delay's seats went to dems...that andrea stewart-cousins defeated nick spano in westchester...that a socialist was elected to the senate in VT...that rick santorum was polited escorted out...the list goes on...feel free to add to it...
i don't mean to preach. i just really wanted to reach out and connect to you, my wonderful friends who live in all parts of the country- sad that we can't celebrate together in person and thought we could at least in cyberspace. would love to know what you are thinking. how you are feeling. perhaps you see it all differently. that's cool. dissent dissent dissent.
