When yyou bend a piece of spaghetti it breaks into three or more parts, with the middle pieces flying out? Why is this?
This short video link shows the action in slow motion. According to research done by scientists Audoly and Neukirch, the unexpected breakage pattern occurs because of "fluxural waves". Basically, the first break causes a shock wave that cuases the next breaks to happen. Awesome.
