As Maldives is a Muslim country, there are certain items that are banned and will not get past customs – alcohol, drugs, religious materials for distribution and pork to name a few.

Though famous for its stunning natural marine life, the Maldives have very strict policies for those disturbing the ecosystem. When going snorkeling, it is advised not to touch the natural reefs.

On inhabited islands, women and men are both expected to dress modestly so as not to offend the locals. Bikinis and topless sunbathing is strictly prohibited, but guests can indulge if they are on resort islands or in areas that allow the same.

As Maldivians traditionally eat food with their hands, if you wish to follow up with this tradition, make sure you use your right hand to eat. Using the left hand for eating is considered unhygienic and rude.
