The official currency of Turkey is the Turkish Lira (₺). The Lira, as a currency, is weaker than some Western currencies. So you are likely to get a better exchange rate. The Lira is available in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200, and coins of one, five, 10, 25 and 50 kuruş and one lira. You can also get your money changed at the bank, however, there is a heavy commission on these and you are likely to be paying more. Traveler’s Cheques are not readily accepted by any outlets. You are likely to be charged a premium service fee for the same.
The best place for exchanging money in Turkey is exchange offices and authorized money changers. US Dollars and Euros are readily accepted for exchange. However, some outlets will also accept Australian Dollars, The Pound and The Yen.
